Tips on Maintaining Graco Paint Sprayers

If you have an airless sprayer, it's important to flush it regularly. If you're using a water based paint such as acrylics or latex paints, you can simply use water - start with a bucket to purge all the paint from the system, then keep changing it out until it runs cleanly through the sprayer. Now, run hot water, with or without soap, through the system to get rid of buildup. Let it cycle through the sprayer at full pressure.

If you're using an oil based paint, you'll want to use a thinner. However, you should only use the recommended thinner for your Graco sprayer, never a lacquer thinner or other harsh solvent. These can destroy the seals and cause costly problems.

Once all the paint is out, take the machine apart. Soak all parts in hot, soapy water. If, after a thorough cleaning, you need to store the sprayer, cycle thinner through the spray lines and pump to protect it. These break up build up and keep the machine working. They also won't freeze, making it easier to store a sprayer in buildings that aren't climate control. Storing a sprayer with water in it in locations where freezing temperatures occur could ruin the pump.

Be sure to have a special container for extra filters and parts for the strayer. You'll routinely need to change the O rings and seals to keep pressure constant. Even a small crack or scratch can mean big trouble for your machine. Fortunately, it's relatively inexpensive to get full seal kits or individual seals, and worth it to keep them in top condition.

You'll also need to pay attention to the filters. Each product you spray should have its own filter, from primer to varnish. Each product also has its own tip. While you're flushing the machine, clean the filters as well. This will help you keep them functional for a long time, without a need for replacement. Tips can simply be placed in a container with thinners to clean them.

Regular maintenance is important if you want your Graco paint sprayer to last a long time and keep serving you reliably. It may seem like a nuisance at first, but it's vital for anyone who doesn't want to spend the money to replace an expensive piece of equipment. Learn how to maintain your sprayer, and it'll keep working well in the long run.
